Digital Discovery
Digial discovery involved the analysis of computer data in search of evidence. While the term forensics is used to cover this activity in relation to matter that may end up in court there are other situations in which similar investigation is called for.You may well ask why someone would employ a digital detective. Consider the following real-life scenarios that may warrant for a visit from a computer sleuth.
An employee is suspected of using a company PC for inappropriate activties such as surfing the web on company time, illegal file sharing or viewing illicit material. These action can lead to serious consequences for the individual and the company involved.
Scenario 2 - Jumping Ship
A sales representative leaves the company suddenly for a job with a competitor and returns their laptop computer with the disk formatted. After a number of clients shortly leave to join the competitor the ex-employee is suspected of taking client account information which she should not have had access to with her to the new company. Did this information exist on the laptop and is there evidence that it was transfered?Scenario 3 - Harassment
An employee alleges that a colleage has been sending harrasing emails and SMS messages. The alleged emails have been deleted by the victim. Were harrassing emails sent to the victim? Who sent them and when?
Scenario 4 - Financial Separation
During divorce proceedings it comes to light that certain savings and items of value cannot be accounted for. One party claims the other has soldor hidden them and has brought the family PC to their solicitor to see if any evidence of this can be brought to light.
